Borrowing From Other Libraries

University Libraries has cooperative partnerships with universities, regionally and nationwide, to help the HU community get the research materials they need.

If an item is not available at the University Libraries, place a Consortium Loan Services (CLS) request with one of our partnering institutions within the Washington Research Library Consortium Libraries (WRLC). If available, these local requests are available for pickup within 2-3 days.

If an item is not available within the WRLC, an Interlibrary loan request can be placed to locate the item nationwide.

ILL Requests

If an item is not available at HU or a partnering WRLC university, patrons may request an Interlibrary loan (ILL), the Access Services department will then initiate a search outside of the local area.

  • This service is only for current HU faculty, students and staff.
  • Each user may only submit three requests per day.
  • Book requests take 3-6 weeks to fill. Book chapter and article requests
generally take 3- 10 days to fill. You will receive an email notification
when items are available. Be sure to check your spam email folder!
  • Before submitting a request, check the SearchBox to see if the item(s) you need is available in the Washington Research Libraries Consortium. If it is, you will receive the material more quickly if you request it via Consortium Loan Service (CLS).
  • Loans are available for pickup at Founders Library Circulation Desk.
  • Articles are sent electronically and are made available through your ILL account.
  • The loan period for an ILL item is set by the lending library, and typically ranges from two to three weeks from the date the item is received at HU. Failure to return an item by its due date will result in a fine or temporary suspension of your library privileges.
  • Overdue fines are $1.00 per day. Replacement costs of material are determined by the lending institution.
  • Unlike WRLC materials, ILL renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Please contact the ILL department at foundersill@howard.edu, before the due date, about the possibility of an ILL renewal.
