Borrow
Faculty, staff, and students at participating Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) universities may borrow books from Howard University Libraries either by request through the Consortium Loan Service (CLS) or in person.
- All patrons must present a valid Howard University, WRLC-issued ID or legal photo identification and have an up-to-date account in order to check out materials.
- Reserve materials are restricted to HU student, faculty, and staff use.
- Reference books, journals and other periodicals, and Course Reserve materials do not circulate and may not be removed from the library.
- Borrowers with $25 or more in fines/fees at any of the WRLC institutions collectively, will not be allowed to borrow materials.
- Materials obtained from WRLC libraries or from Interlibrary Loan through Founders Library may only be returned to the Founders Library Circulation Desk.
Renew
Patrons may renew:
- Via My Library account:

Recalled and overdue items may not be renewed.
Renewing Interlibrary loans items (ILL):
- In-person, bringing the item to ILL staff at Founders Library Circulation Desk
- Phone: ILL Staff at Founders Library 202-806-7240 before the due date
- ILL Renewals are permitted at the discretion of the lending library.

Return
Materials obtained from WRLC libraries or from Interlibrary Loan through Founders Library may only be returned to the Founders Library Circulation Desk.
SEARCH REQUEST
If a library user believes that they have returned a lost book to the library, they may submit a Search Request at the Founders Library Circulation Desk. The library staff will search for the book for six weeks.
If the book is found in those six weeks:
- Lost Item Replacement - FeeWAIVED
- Lost Item Processing - FeeWAIVED
- Overdue - FeeWAIVED
If the book is not found after six weeks of searching, the library user will be responsible for all fines associated with the lost item ($120.00 total).
- Lost Item Replacement Fee - $80.00
- Lost Item Replacement Fee - $30.00
- Lost Item Replacement Fee - $10.00
Procedures for Submitting a Search Request:

A notice will be mailed in six weeks indicating that:
- The book has been found and is being held, or
- The book is missing from the collection and your library account will be charged for the item’s replacement fee, lost processing fee and overdue fine
If you lose a book that you have borrowed from one of the Washington Research Library Consortium Libraries (WRLC), you must contact the lending library directly with any questions or concerns regarding the book or the associated fines. - If you lose a book that you have borrowed from Interlibrary loan Services, the replacement cost is at the discretion of the lending institution.

VISITOR BORROWING POLICY
- Borrowing privileges are reserved for current students, faculty and staff.
However, the public is welcome to peruse the University Libraries’
general collection - A valid photo ID must be presented to enter all University Libraries
- There is no printing available to the general public. The photocopy
machines can scan to a preferred email (PDF) free of charge.
